Zapp’s Evil Eye Chips (Review)

When it comes to chips with interesting and robust southern/Creole flavoring, you’re going to hear about Zapp’s. With infusions of spicy, tangy, and all levels of zany, Zapp’s has a chip for any taste palette adventurous enough. Zapp’s Evil Eye Chips are explained as having mild heat and an explosion of flavor, and as a fan of the hot, that’s a great step in the right direction for me.

When I think of an evil eye, I picture the blue stone with rings of color that looks like an eye, meant as a ward or element to bring in outside forces. This is also mentioned on the back of Zapp’s Evil Eye Chips bag with some Voodoo lore. That said, I’d prefer these chips didn’t impact my mood, luck, and other goings on in my life.

Unfortunately, Zapp’s being a part of the Utz snack family means it comes at a heavier-hitting price. Although regular-size bags of name-brand chips are more commonly hitting above the $3 mark, It certainly isn’t something I want to splurge for often. So this will likely be the one time I have a Zapp’s this month and then move on to other more price-cautious brands.

Bag and receipt in hand, the first part of the deed is done, let’s see just how “mild but robust” the flavor truly is!

How do they taste though?

Please Don’t Watch Me While I Eat

So now that we’ve gotten past the staring eyes adorning the bag, I will say that the chips smell is not really lending itself to make me believe the chips would be flavorful. As I eat the chips what I experience is a sweeter, chili’d ketchup. There is a little kick to them, but it’s practically invisible. The way the chips finish is really pleasant and leaves you wanting another handful.

These chips are great because they are a crispier texture, an extremely unique flavor, but in my experience were a bit trickier to find. I was able to get these at 5 Below, which is really great if you’re trying to find something a bit more uncommon. I would consider these chips a 7/10, the flavor is great but the mentioned heat could be a little more, and the price is again, too high for the product you get. If the price were to drop I’d be open to re-visiting these snacks, otherwise, I’ll just wait until someone feels charitable and gives me a bag.
