Acquiring The Maple Bacon Fritter

I recently took the family to a weekend getaway in Maine. One of the stops on our list was the famous Congdon’s Doughnuts. This bakery can be found on Post Rd in Wells, ME.

I did not get to go to Congdon’s myself. My wife got up early and went out while I let our toddler sleep in for a bit. However, she came back with one of Congdon’s Doughnuts’ biggest attractions: The Maple Bacon Fritter.

I was surprised that she was able to acquire one for me. I know that this is a very popular item that tends to sell out quickly. Luckily, she was able to get there bright and early to grab me one.

My Initial Thoughts

Before taking my first bite, my expectations were not high. Bacon-infused items have been all the rage over the past decade or so. Many of these items are often hit or miss.

Sometimes they do not have enough bacon to give any noticeable difference in flavor. On the other side of things, many bacon-flavored items are overpowered through the use of artificial smoke flavoring. These items taste more like the grate of a grill than bacon.

I didn’t know what I was getting into here, but as a lover of weird-flavored food, I knew that I had to dig in.

Taking The First Bite

The first thing I noticed about the Maple Bacon Fritter was that it was not dressed up in an over-the-top way. Many places will make their bacon-infused items look insane with their presentation. This was not the case for Congdon’s Donuts. It looked like a regular fritter.

For me, this was a good sign. They weren’t trying to shove the bacon in my face. I can do that myself. Jokes aside, I was ready to take my first bite.

I was extremely impressed with how well-balanced the flavors were. It wasn’t smokey or overpowering. It tasted like a very well-made fritter that just happened to have bacon as one of its ingredients.

The Maple Bacon Fritter was sweet, sticky, and doughy. It had all the great qualities we have come to expect from breakfast/dessert fritters. It didn’t have to put the bacon in the forefront to get you to enjoy it. I respected the fritter for this.

With my wife and child being pescatarian, I didn’t have to share it with anyone. While I wasn’t able to get a second mouth to verify the amazing taste, I was happy that I got to have the entire thing to myself.

My Final Thoughts

This was my first time experiencing Congdon’s Doughnuts. While I did not have any of their regular donuts, I was very impressed by their Maple Bacon Fritter.

If you are ever in the Wells/Ogunquit area of Maine, make sure to stop by Congdon’s to get yourself one of these fritters. I believe that this confection is great for bacon-lovers, as well as people who just love good sweets. I was definitely head back for another one the next time I am in Maine.
